Mississippi Treasurer Says Tuition Hike Emphasizes Need for College Savings Mississippi 529 Plans

Jackson‐ “News of an impending tuition hike forthe state’s eight public universities makes the College Savings Mississippi MPACT plan all that more important” State Treasurer Lynn Fitch said today.

Average full‐time tuition at Mississippi’s public institutions has risen 65 percent in the last 10 years. “Investing your dollars now is key” Fitch says. “I worry about our children’s future and that some students may decide to put off college because they can’t afford it.”

Monday, the state College Board approved tuition hikes for the state’s eight public universities. This year’s average tuition of $5,447 will reach $5,908 next year and jump to $6,263 in 2014. That’s an average increase of 15 percent over two years, 1 percent higher than best‐case scenario proposals.

Treasurer Fitch says the two College Savings Mississippi plans are affordable solutions that help make college possible for all of the children in our state. “We believe in the importance of a college education for every Mississippi child. “
