As legislators begin considering and voting on bond bills during the 2014 Session, the Office of the State Treasurer has just completed a Debt Affordability Study. Treasurer Lynn Fitch responded to the need for a tool to help state government better plan for managing its current and future debts. The findings contained in the study will help guide legislators as they weigh bond bills. Policymakers will also benefit from this tool as they assess the impact of bond programs on the State’s fiscal position, enabling them to make informed decisions regarding capital spending priorities and economic development needs.
This Debt Affordability Study is the first ever done in the state of Mississippi. The Treasurer’s Office will update this information annually going forward. Treasurer Fitch shared information on the Study with media at a press conference and answered their questions about what the Study actually tells us.
